Hello there all of my beautiful Anishinaababes! In todays post I would love to talk a little bit about spiritual and mental wellness. (Although you could even say that meditation helps with your physical wellness and entire wellbeing). So why meditation? Well, last month I watched a video on Youtube by Michelle Khare called “We Tried 7 Days of Meditation” and it inspired me to take on this challenge. (For those of you who also love Michelle Khare you need to check out this video). In this video she goes to meditation sessions, uses apps, and partners up with a friend to meditate for 7 full days – and I did the same.
In Michelles video she uses an app called unplug (not sponsored) and embarks on a spiritual journey for 7 days. Thus, I decided to download the app myself and with the free 7 day trial and took on the goal of doing meditation every day for 7 days. I teamed up with my friend who is also a residence advisor and every night we did a 10-20 meditation on my bed. When I initially started looking into meditation and told her about this challenge we looked up the health benefits and science behind it and this is what we found:
- Meditation reduces stress, and prepares you to deal with stressful events
- Enhances self-awareness
- Lengthens attention span, helps with learning and memory recall
- Can reduce age-related memory loss
- Meditation improves your mood
- Fosters creativity
- Reduces risk of heart disease and stroke
- Reduces blood pressure
- Improves empathy and positive relationships
- May help you live longer
- Gives you mental strength, resilience and emotional intelligence
…And this only skims the surface! My friend who is actually in medical sciences even says that her teachers have brought up scientific studies proving the health and wellness benefits. So it came as no surprise when I brought this up to her that she was on board.
How We Meditated
Every night at around 7-9pm we would get together in my room and prepare the room for meditation. I would turn on my Himalayan salt lamp, turn on my fairy lights and turn off the bright light in my room. I would connect the meditation to my speaker in my room and we would both sit on my bed. Whether or not we believe in healing crystals I am not 100% sure yet but I decided to throw them in and every meditation we would hold a new crystal. Then, we would select a meditation. Now, I seriously is not even sponsored by UnPlug but they are seriously awesome. You can choose exactly what kind of meditation you need, for how long and by who. We tried gratitude, test preparation, sleep, self-reflection, de-stress, and letting go meditations just to name a few. The app lets you get really focused and choose very specific mediations such as “work stress” or ones for when you get in a fight with a friend. They even ones for relationships, and breakups. 10/10 would recommend.
During each session I not only felt relaxed, but it gave me time to reflect on my day and take time for myself. Which is something I think a lot of us need to do more of! After the meditation I always felt so calm and at ease with my life. Throughout the week I found that I was able to focus on assignments and was a lot more thankful for the simple things in my life. Everyday I had a new perspective and thought critically about what I wanted to do and how I was going to change the world. I now wake up everyday with gratitude and am overwhelmed by how happy I am for the simplest things nowadays. I am now writing an E-Book, have been taking my Instagram a lot more seriously for my blog, and have been learning about my culture so much more than before. I set goals, exercise, and tell everyone how much they mean to me. I still use today – meditation for test anxiety, gratitude, and to re-align myself. Although it may not seem like a huge change to you, but for me this change in my mood and happiness meant everything. And that is how 7 days of meditation changed my life 🧘♀️🧘🏼♂️
